The club competes in the Malaysia Super League and has a rich history in Malaysian football.
Established in 1923 as the Negeri Sembilan Football Association (Persatuan Bolasepak Negeri Sembilan), the team originally represented the state of Negeri Sembilan Darul Khusus. They secured their first major title in 1948 by winning the Malaysia Cup, then known as the H.M.S Malaya Cup.
Over the years, NSFC has achieved significant success in domestic competitions. The club won the Malaysia Cup three times (1948, 2009, and 2011), the FA Cup twice (2003 and 2010), and the Charity Shield in 2012. They were also crowned Super League champions in 2006.
The team operated under PBNS until 2020, when it underwent privatization. In 2020, the club transitioned into a private entity and was rebranded as Negeri Sembilan Football Club. This transformation was approved by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), and the club was registered as Negeri Sembilan Football Club Sdn. Bhd. (Negeri Sembilan Football Club Pvt. Ltd.). Despite the privatization, NSFC remains a subsidiary of PBNS, with Tunku Syed Razman serving as Chairman for NSFC and President for PBNS. That same year, the club won the Malaysia Premier League and secured promotion to the Super League.
